HP de Tijd cover illustration

It may be interesting to show the process of making a copver illustration. I had a short deadline, so I divided my time in three parts:

1.Thumbnailing
2.Sketching
3. Painting the illustration.

The thumbnails above show different concepts for the illustration. The subject of the story was: These days many parents with young children divorce, but they both do the upbringing of their child (with their new partner) Some of the concepts are from the viewpoint of the child, some from the viewpoint of the parent... The thumbnails are a way of brainstorming, and trying to tackle the subject from different angles.
The art director decides which one he thinks best fits the cover. some of the other thumbnails will turn into small illustrations to accompany the article.
Final illustration. You can see some choices were made after the sketch; for instance to use straight lines and pointy corners in the man's home, and curves and ornaments in the woman's home, to bring up the contrast between them.
Final cover.
One of the small illustrations to accompany the article inside the magazine.

Papiria

For the children's books museum, I created these characters, objects and backgrounds. In the museum, children will be able to create their own comic strip, by selecting backgrounds, characters and objects. They can scale and flip the objects and characters to match the story they come up with. I added some examples of compositions that can be made with these elements

aaaahhh...Paris!

I spent the weekend in Paris. I had the opportunity to visit Musee d' Orsay, and see many, many very beautiful works by Degas, Monet, Manet, L'Hermitte , Rodin and many others. There was a special exhibition dedicated to the works of Jean Leon Gerome. Until then I had only seen reproductions of his paintings, and seeing them in real life was just amazing... I was blown away by his use of color, his understanding of light and reflections...

I also visited gallery Arludik on the last day of their Glen Keane exhibition. Again I was blown away by his skillful drawings, and the ease with which he seems to handle his subjects...

There was nothing left to do for me but to try and blow Paris away in return...

I spent the last day of 2010 working on this cover illustration. The story deals with the question: why is it so that life gets better when we get older...
